A small bronze statue of Sir Winston Churchill which was beloved by him and his wife has sold for £260,000.

The 2ft tall maquette was produced by sculptor Oscar Nemon who was a friend and confidant of the wartime prime minister.

Nemon's statue was used as the basis of the full size Churchill figure which was unveiled by his widow Lady Clementine Churchill in Westminster Palace in 1969, four years after his death.

Lady Churchill said glowingly of Nemon's effort: "It represents to me my husband as I see him and as I think of him, and I would like to have it just as it is."

The statue was consigned by the family of the Tory grandee and businessman, Sir Edward du Cann.
