A huge 197-year-old marble frieze depicting a victorious Lord Nelson has emerged for sale for £40,000.

The 12ft 4in long scene was created by prolific English sculptor Edward Hodges Baily and shows a moment that established Nelson as a hero.

It depicts the famous naval officer receiving the Spanish surrender after the Battle of St Vincent, with Spanish Admiral Don Francisco Xavier Winthuysen lying dying on a gun carriage of the deck of the San Josef and handing his sword to Nelson, watched by other sailors and British officers.

Baily made friezes for both Buckingham Palace and Marble Arch, as well as statues of public figures including the one of Horatio Nelson on the top of Nelson's Column and several memorials in St Paul's Cathedral.
