An extremely rare silk banner which was used to announce the abolition of slavery has sold for more than seven times its estimated value for nearly £15,000.

The historic banner was bought at an antiques market 40 years ago and it had been carefully rolled up in a cardboard tube ever since.
The nearly 150-year-old blue and gold silk bears the message: 'August 1, 1834 slavery in the British Dominions Utterly and for ever Abolished'.
