An early 19th century cookbook containing the earliest known recipe for crisps has sold at auction.

The recipe for the popular snack was included in the Cook's Oracle by William Kitchiner, a celebrity chef of his day.

Kitchiner wrote in the 1817 first edition of how to prepare 'potatoes fried in slices or shavings'.
The end result would have been ready salted crisps.
