Bungling developers who destroyed 19 protected trees while building a huge housing estate have promised to 'reuse' the wood for benches in an attempt to "save face".
The controversial 760-home development will be the biggest ever built in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Britain.
But the developers went off plan on the first day of work and accidentally tore up 300ft of hedgerow and 19 trees on private land in error.
