Quarter-Master Sergeant James King used a sponge to plug a hole in his vessel as he paddled into a heavily defended shipping port on the Greek island of Leros.<br />

He and fellow commando Marine Richard Ruff placed six limpet mines on the hull of an enemy destroyer and escaped the harbour without being seen before it exploded.
