A rare portrait of the English painter Sir Stanley Spencer drawn by a lesbian artist he was involved with in a bizarre love triangle has come to light.

The pencil sketch of a shirtless Spencer was produced by Dorothy Hepworth during the colourful period the pair shared a relationship with model Patricia Preece.

She had been a nude sitter for Spencer who became so infatuated with her in the 1930s he divorced his wife, Hilda Carline, after she refused to share him with Preece.
