The new bishop of Salisbury yesterday strode out on a traditional 2.5 mile pilgrimage walk to mark his inauguration.

The Right Reverend Stephen Lake walked from Old Sarum, the ancient site of the original cathedral just outside of the Wiltshire city.

The cathedral had to relocate to Salisbury over 750 years ago as the Old Sarum location was so windy the clergy could not hear themselves sing.

Since then it has become tradition that the new bishop marks the start of their tenure by walking from the old site to the 'new' cathedral.

The Rev Lake was accompanied by a group of Scouts.
