A cigar gifted by Winston Churchill to the RAF doctor who helped him after he broke his leg in France has sold for £5,000.

In 1962, the legendary war hero fell while getting out of bed in Monte-Carlo and after an operation he was flown back to Britain by the RAF.

Bertram Barrow was squad leader of the medical plane that carried Churchill back home and he plucked up the courage to ask for one of the hero's iconic cigars.

He treasured the memento for the rest of his life and kept it safe in his bedside drawer.
