An incredibly rare script for legendary film director Orson Welles' controversial War of the Worlds radio broadcast has sold for £70,000.

Welles was just 23 when his radio adaption of H.G Wells' terrifying sci-fi novel sent listeners into mass panic, fearing aliens were invading the planet on Halloween, 1938.

Straight after the broadcast, which he also narrated, Welles came out of character to reassure listeners that 'there was no Martian'.
