Derek's painting was finally delivered in 1983.

A painting of a tiger by celebrated wildlife artist David Shepherd which was won in a raffle 42 years ago has emerged for sale for £15,000.

Derek Gane was entered into ta prize draw after buying one of Shepherd's prints at the Fleet Air Museum in Yeovilton, Somerset.

His number has pulled out in a field of 850 people and the prize was for Shepherd to paint him a picture of an animal of his choice.

Gane, from Stoford, near Yeovil, suggested a grizzly bear as a reminder of his holiday at the Yosemite National Park in the United States. But Shepherd declined this request as he didn't like painting animals he was not familiar with.

They settled on a tiger and he produced this 11ins by 21ins oil on canvas artwork showing the majestic animal resting in the shade, which is now being sold with Charterhouse Auctioneers, of Sherborne, Dorset.
