The remarkable story of an undercover soldier who completed a daring James Bond-style mission behind the Iron Curtain can be told after his gallantry medals emerged for sale.

Sergeant Anthony Haw was part of a three-man team that broke into an East German gunnery range to obtain invaluable intelligence on a new range of Soviet tanks at the height of the Cold War.

Under the cover of darkness the brave trio simply picked the lock of a gate to access the hangar with the aim of securing any physical evidence of the T-64 tank to take away with them.
Sgt Haw had already received the Queen's Gallantry Medal for his six tours of Northern Ireland in the 1970s with the Green Howards when he became an SAS trained plain clothes operative.
