A rare photo revealing L.S. Lowry's football-playing childhood has emerged on sale alongside a 'unique' letter to an old friend.

The celebrated English artist can be seen as a young boy fully kitted out with his teammates in the Victorian-era snap.

Lowry, whose famous matchsick men paintings include 'Going to the Match' which sold for £7.8m last year, was an avid Manchester City fan.

However, insight into his playing days have been scarce.

In the accompanying handwritten letter to a friend dated October 1966, Lowry confirms he is one of the boys in the black and white photo and could even name the others at the time of writing.
