A rare coconut cup looted from a treasure chest belonging to the real life Captain Jack Sparrow has sold for over £17,000.

The 300-year-old goblet was salvaged by Admiral Sir Chancellor Ogle, the nemesis of notorious pirate Bartholomew 'Black Bart' Roberts.

The naval officer hunted down and killed the Welsh pirate off the coast of Gabon, West Africa, in 1722.

Roberts' rogue antics had made him a sensation and he is said to be the inspiration for Johnny Depp's character Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

He claimed over 400 prizes raiding shipping off the Americas and West Africa and was the first pirate to adopt the skull and crossbones flag.
