The rip-roaring exploits of a 'fearless' World War Two submariner can be revealed after his bravery medals emerged for sale for £5,000.

Petty Officer Stanley Hawkey risked his life doing 'magic carpet' runs bringing supplies to bombed and besieged Malta. Later in the war, he sank a Japanese cruiser and 14 other enemy vessels during dramatic Far East operations.

He survived 'one of the heaviest depth charge attacks ever made on a British submarine' which blew open the fore hatch.

Hawkey, who also served on board HM Submarine Tally Ho, was immortalised on the front cover of a forces magazine getting a kiss on the cheek from his wife Doris. In another image the Cornish farmer's son smokes a cigar with a pint in front of him.

Hawkey received the Distinguished Service Medal and Bar for his 'outstanding courage and undaunted devotion to duty'. His medals are going under the hammer at London-based auctioneers Noonans.
