A team of divers have launched a bid to finally solve the 50 year mystery surrounding an unqualified pilot who stole a huge military aircraft which them disappeared in the English Channel.<br />

In May 1969, Paul Meyer, an American Air Force mechanic at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, stole a Hercules C-130 transportation plane in a bizarre and deluded effort to fly home to the US.<br />
<br />
The aircraft disappeared from radar screens an hour after he managed to take off and wreckage was later found off the Channel Island of Alderney.<br />
<br />
There were suggestions that the plane was shot down by the RAF
