Artic art...

Unseen paintings of the Arctic by 19th century British explorer Cdr Albert Markham whilst racing to the North Pole, have come to light in a journal he kept which is now set to sell for £150,000.

The vivid artwork depicts the pioneering men of the British Arctic Expedition in 1875 as they attempted to become the first people ever to reach the North Pole.

The stunning watercolours show the scenes the extreme north that the explorers encountered for the first time ever.

They portray the base camp the expedition set up on a polar plain with two tents and a Union flag.

Another shows a member of the party spearfishing for seals, while others are of men using sleds pulled by dogs and sails.

They are among an archive of material belonging to Markham, being sold by his family, that is tipped to fetch £150,000 when it goes under the hammer at Bonhams.
