Mrs Doubtfire...

A new exhibition sheds light on the little-known story of the only woman to serve on the Western Front by dressing as a male soldier in World War One.

Dorothy Lawrence posed as 'Private Denis Smith' by flattening her chest with a corset, filling out her shoulders with cotton wool, and using shoe polish to darken her face.

Her extraordinary heroism was 'overlooked' for more than 100 years, despite publishing an autobiography of her experiences.

Now curators are giving her the acclaim she deserves in a new exhibition at Salisbury Museum.
