A rare 83-year-old comic featuring the first appearance of Superman has sold for a staggering £2.3million. ($3.18m)

The Action Comics 1 was sold by the relatives of the comic fan who bought it in 1938 in the US for 10 cents - £1.50 today.
The publication shows the caped superhero on its front cover lifting a car above his head.

It sparked a bidding war when it hammered down with Heritage Auctions, of Dallas, Texas.
Also in the sale, original comic book artwork showing Spiderman in his black costume fetched a record £2.45m. It came from page 25 of Secret Wars No 8, published in 1984, which tells the origin of the superhero's darker attire.
