A vicar has praised devine intervention for saving his church from an act of God - after the cross of Jesus stopped a bolt of lightning.

The stone cross on the roof of St Peter's in Poole, Dorset, was cut in half after being struck by the lightning strike.

In doing so it spared the building from serious damage and a potential fire.
Reverend Mike Trotman noticed the damage the following day. He joked: "The cross of Jesus Christ bore the burden and took the hit!"
