A remarkable cache of hundreds of previously unseen letters from members of The Few have come to light in a new book.
Historian Dilip Sarkar corresponded with 27 Battle of Britain veterans over four decades and kept hold of the letters.
There are letters from famous figures including Group Captain Peter Townsend, who was equerry to George VI and had a high-profile relationship with Princess Margaret after the war.
He also corresponded with lesser known heroes including Polish airmen, as well as a German foe who saved many British lives by choosing not to drop a 'huge bomb' on Newcastle.
Mr Sarkar, from Worcs, is now publishing the contents of these letters for the first time in his new book, Letters From The Few.
