A 16th century Italian etched field armour sold for £40,000 in Thomas Del Mar's London saleroom.
The £2.5 million pound sale of the John Woodman Higgins collection of arms and armour has concluded this week.
At the height of the Renaissance a suit of armour cost many times the price of a Titian or Raphael 'It was the equilvalent cost of owning a Formula 1 team, your house and your wife's jewellry all rolled in to one' said Thomas Del Mar, 'Many Aristocrats bankrupted themselves in an arms race to have the most fashionable and functional suits.'
