Just Chilean - Freshly shorn Alpaca's at Pennybridge Alpacas in Hampshire.

Summertime, and the Alpacas are freezing.

The annual hair cut for Britains growing number of Alpaca farmers is on...and with their high quality fleece selling for £20 a kilo, a few months of indignity is a small price to pay.

Despite still being thought of as exotic there are in fact over 35,000 alpacas in the UK since being introduced by Sir Titus Salt around 1836.

Alpaca coats, gowns and materials were very fashionable during Queen Victoria's reign – in fact they were so prized and hardwearing that they were bequeathed in wills to future generations.

Sir Titus became the largest employer in Bradford, West Yorkshire, building the model industrial village of Saltaire in 1851 on the back of this success.
