The poignant story of a British woman who lost two fiances to Spitfire crashes during World War Two is revealed in a new book.

Joan Welch was engaged to her childhood sweetheart, defence of Malta hero Flight Lieutenant Lester Sanders, who was killed in 1942.

She found love again with Pilot Officer Ian Smith and they were due to marry when he lost his life in a Spitfire crash in Palestine in 1945.

Mercifully, she found happiness post-war and walked down the aisle with an architect who she was married to for over 50 years.
