The Egyptian cat that was saved from being thrown into a skip has sold for £61,000 at auction.
A sculpture of a cat kept by a fireplace by its owners and nearly thrown into a skip has sold for £61,000 after it was revealed to be a 2,500-year-old Ancient Egyptian relic.
The black cat was spotted in front of a gas fire when a family called in an auction house to carry out a routine house clearance following the death of their elderly mother.
Amazingly, the family had been about to throw the ornament in a skip on the driveway of the house in Penzance, Cornwall, when experts intervened.
Suspecting the bronze sculpture could be something special, auctioneer David Lay took it to specialists at the British Museum who confirmed it to originate from 600BC Ancient Egypt.
