The government has imposed an export ban on a 'nationally important' Victoria Cross after it was bought at auction by a foreign buyer for £680,000.<br />

The prestigious gallantry medal was one of just 22 awarded to a member of the RAF during the Second World War and the only one for their action in the Far East. <br />

It was won by Squadron Leader Arthur Scarf who was fatally wounded while he single-handedly attacked a heavily defended Japanese air base in Malaya.<br />
<br />
His Blenheim light bomber was raked with machine gun and cannon fire, causing him to drift in and out of consciousness in mid-air.
