Titanic claim form...
Key passage of Lightollers account.
The most senior surviving officer of the Titanic apparently tried to downplay the cause of the accident in an insurance claim form that has emerged for sale.
In the unique document filled out days after the disaster, second officer Charles Lightoller described the iceberg that sunk the luxury liner as 'small' and 'low lying'.
And he stated the ship made a 'slight jar' when it struck the glacier on the night of April 14, 1912.
The iceberg was between 50ft to 100ft high and between 200ft to 400ft wide and the blow was sufficient enough to sink the liner within four hours.
Lightoller's modest description of the iceberg and collision may have been an attempt to minimise the case of negligence by Titanic owners White Star Line, experts say.
