An historic airworthy Spitfire which shot down a German plane during World War Two and appeared in two classic war films has emerged for sale for £4.5million.

It was then seen in the epic American war film The Longest Day (1962) about the D-Day landings, starring John Wayne, Kenneth More, Richard Todd, Richard Burton and Sean Connery.

In 1969, the Spitfire featured in The Battle of Britain, whose cast included Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer and Robert Shaw.
The Spitfire was flown on September 24, 1943 by Flight Officer Desmond Ruchwaldy who shot down an enemy Focke-Wulf Fw north west of Amiens, France. Eighty-years on, it is going under the hammer at London-based auctioneers Bonhams at their Goodwood sale.
