Surfers will soon be able to ride waves without the need for beaches or the ocean thanks to a revolutionary 'wave garden' set to debut in the UK.

The six million pounds surfing lake, the world's first public wave pool of its kind, uses cutting edge technology to fire perfectly formed waves along a 1,000ft man-made lagoon.

Normally, surfers are forced to wait for waves to be formed by the right weather conditions - a rare occurrence around British shores.

But the new open-air attraction, dubbed The Wave, will offer the chance to enjoy guaranteed rides of up to 20 seconds long on peeling waves as tall as 5ft.

It will shoot out 120 waves per hour - two every minute - either side of a central pier and will aim to stay open for 10 months of the year.

There will be seperate areas for beginners, and one hour's surfing will cost around £15.

The first site has been earmarked to open near Bristol in summer 2014, with more UK sites planned including one on the Isle of Wight.
