A remarkable travel diary documenting the ten-month round-the-world honeymoon of a Victorian couple has emerged 125 years later.<br />
<br />
With descriptions of a gruesome elephant hunt, visiting an opium den and a hair-raising journey from Canada to Japan which saw their boat capsize, the journal offers a fascinating insight into the adventurous lives of Lily and Godfrey Armitage.<br />
<br />
The hard-backed diary is filled with 129 pages of Mrs Armitage's handwritten account of their exploits with sketches, photographs, newspaper clippings and tickets to illustrate.<br />
<br />
The travel journal is expected to fetch £1,000 when it goes up for sale with David Lay Auctions in Penzance, Cornwall.<br />
<br />
The Armitages' journey started in Manchester in September 1893 and was based upon a Cook's World Tour taking in America, Canada, Japan, China, Ceylon and India, before they returned to England via Plymouth in May 1894.
