The legendary motorbike ridden by Hollywood star Peter Fonda in classic sixties film Easy Rider is set to become the most valuable in the world after emerging for sale for a staggering 740,000 pounds.

The chrome-covered Harley Davidson chopper became an instant icon on the release of the 1969 cult classic, which starred Fonda and Dennis Hopper as freewheeling hippies on a voyage of discovery across America.

The film is said to be responsible for kickstarting a trend in modern motorbiking inspired by the unmistakable bike ridden by Fonda's character Wyatt, known as Captain America.

Experts say the 1951 Harley FL, which boasts huge handlebars and forks and has the Stars and Stripes painted on its petrol tank, is the most famous motorbike in the world.

It is set to sell for $1.2 million - around £740,000 - when it goes under the hammer at Los Angeles auction house Profiles In History on October 18.
