One of Britains great cathedral's could be closed down if an emergency appeal for £1.3 million is not successful by the end of August.

Historic Guildford cathedral, where cult horror film The Omen was filmed, is facing closure because its ceiling is laced with asbestos.

The 10,000sq ft ceiling of Guildford Cathedral was sprayed with a special acoustic plaster made from the deadly mineral in a bid to improve the sound quality when it was built in the 1960s.

Fifty years on the ceiling has started to crumble forcing church bosses to launch an appeal to raise £7 million pounds to pay for its restoration.

They say that if the money can't be raised they will have no choice but to close its doors for good - the first British cathedral ever to do so.

To add further pressure to the campaign, they have to raise 1.3 million pounds by the end of August in order to qualify for a Heritage Lottery Fund.
More than 200,000 people paid two shillings and sixpence - the equivalent of 12.5 pence today - to buy a brick when the price of building materials shot up after World War II.
