A decision by the National Trust to dedicate to the Queen the historic tree synonymous with the Tolpuddle Martyrs has been slammed by descendants of the pioneering trade unionists.

The six agricultural labourers met around the ancient sycamore tree in the Dorset village of Tolpuddle in 1833 to discuss how to improve working conditions. In doing so, they formed the first trade union in the UK.
The tree is now owned by the National Trust which has announced it will dedicate it to the Queen to mark her Platinum Jubilee.
