A unique Mercedes 'Gullwing' sports car displayed in pristine condition at a museum for 50 years has sold for more than £1.6 million.

The 1955 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing gets its name from its flamboyant doors that, when both fully opened, make the motor look like a seagull.

They were among the most desirable cars of the day with just 1,400 of them made between 1954 and 1963.
