A 2,000-year-old gold ring found by a metal detectorist only to then be kept in a cupboard for 30 years has sold for £36,000.

The 24 carat gold ring dates back to the Iron Age and would have belonged to a chieftain of a Celtic tribe living in Yorkshire.

The ring is fascinating as it was made 100 years before the Roman invasion and 800 years before the Vikings created jewellery of a similar standard.
