A bleak single expanse that is Britain's only desert has gone on sale for the first time in 50 years for £1.5 million.

The desolate Dungeness Estate on Romney Marsh in Kent has been owned by a family trust since it was established in 1964 but the trustees have now decided to sell up.

The windswept 468-acre estate sits on a peninsula jutting into the English Channel and is famously home to an overbearing nuclear power station and a scattering of tumbledown huts and old railway coaches.
The landscape is so barren that it has become one of the country's most iconic landmarks and has become an unlikely tourist hotspot attracting one million visitors a year.
