A rare penny coin struck at Hastings before the famous 1066 battle has sold for £20,000 after a bidding war.
It carries the portrait of Harold II, the last crowned Anglo-Saxon English king, who was killed at the Battle of Hastings by William the Conqueror's Norman invaders.
The coin, which was consigned for sale by an overseas private collector, is one of 11 known surviving examples.
Its sale was highly anticipated as it was the first time this type of penny had emerged on the market for 37 years.
A British private collector paid two and a half times the £8,000 estimate when it hammered down at London-based auctioneers Noonans.
