The bravery medals of a hero paratrooper of the Battle of Arnhem have emerged for sale for £44,000.

Captain Bernard Briggs, of the 1st Parachute Brigade, was part of a remarkable rearguard at Arnhem Bridge during the ill-fated Operation Market Garden in September 1944.

He was part of a small force dropped behind enemy lines to secure the northern end of the bridge alongside legendary Lieutenant Colonel Jack Frost's 2nd Battalion.

For three days they were engaged in fierce close quarter fighting with their German adversaries, withstanding continuous shelling and mortar attacks. His party fought until every building they occupied had been burnt down by the Germans.

The immense courage of Capt Briggs and his fellow paratroopers was later immortalised in the 1977 film 'A Bridge Too Far' starring Dirk Bogarde and Michael Caine. His medals, including a Military Cross awarded for his 'gallant and distinguished service at Arnhem', are going under the hammer with London-based auctioneers Dix Noonan Webb.
