One of the earliest known maps of London has been sold for £6,500 by the family of a former London mayor.<br />

The fascinating engraved plan of the capital - or metropolis - of England dates from the time of Queen Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare.<br />

The hand-coloured map shows how the city looked in the 1570s when it would have had a population of about 200,000 people.
