A new variety of sunflower that is guaranteed to grow to at least 17ft tall has been bred for British gardens by a pensioner Victoria Wakefield who has spent over 30 years developing it.

Green-fingered Victoria Wakefield has cultivated the towering species Helianthus Giraffe by selecting the seeds of the tallest sunflower from a crop and growing them on the following year.

She repeated the process over three decades until the sunflower consistently grew to a height of 17ft.
The seeds are available at garden centres now.
