A train fanatic who was a teenager on board the last journey on a historic railway line 50 years ago has driven a locomotive on the restored route.
Peter Frost was aged 13 when he travelled on the final British Rail train from Wareham to Swanage, in Dorset, on New Year's Day in 1972.
The ten mile Swanage Railway, which had operated since 1885, was ripped up as part of the controversial Beeching Cuts in the 1960s and 1970s.
Peter watched on forlornly as the line was demolished despite local opposition and was part of efforts to rebuild it as a heritage attraction, training as a volunteer driver in the early 1980s.
The 63-year-old retired engineer was chosen to drive a British Railways 1960 two three-carriage unit Class 117 locomotive for a special 50th anniversary commemorative service yesterday (Sat).
