A candid letter by Lawrence of Arabia disowning his famous surname as he strived for anonymity has come to light 96 years later and sold for almost £10,000.
T.E Lawrence became a British hero for his leading role in the Arab Revolt during the World War One desert campaign.
But he grew to despise his celebrity status and longed for a quieter life, leading him to change his surname to Shaw, after his friend, the playwright George Bernard Shaw.
