The amazing exploits of a fearless World War One flying ace can be revealed after his bravery medals emerged for sale for £25,000.
Air Vice Marshal Sir Matthew 'Bunty' Frew, of 45 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, officially claimed 23 kills during the conflict.
But in reality his total was likely far higher as he often gave credits for victories to junior colleagues which were really his own to boost their confidence.
He would put himself in harm's way to protect them during dogfights whenever enemy aircraft got on their tail.
