Air Vice Marshal Sir Matthew 'Bunty' Frew, of 45 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, officially claimed 23 kills during the conflict.<br />

But in reality his total was likely far higher as he often gave credits for victories to junior colleagues which were really his own to boost their confidence.<br />
