We will fight them for the beach huts...

A group of hardy souls queued up a day early in the freezing cold to secure a sought-after beach hut for the summer.

They have gone to extreme lengths to snap up the 15 timber cabins available at Avon Beach, Christchurch, Dorset.

The first in the queue, Jan Ryder, was in position at 6.15am on Sunday, almost 26 hours before the administration office opened at 7.30am today.

Matthew Cox, 60, a mechanical engineer, was in position just before 7am. He remembers being taken to the beach by his late mother Margaret as a child and has queued up each year for a hut since her passing three years ago.
