Fascinating art work by a British mountaineer who twice climbed Mount Everest have sold at auction a century later for over £30,000.

Theodore Howard Somervell took part in pioneering expeditions to the Himalayas in 1922 and 1924.

He got to within 1,000ft of the summit, the highest point reached at that time, despite not using an oxygen tank.

The skilled artist produced dozens of watercolours and sketches of the scenes he witnessed, including glacial peaks and camp life.

His works sparked a bidding war when they were sold by a direct descendant with Stroud Auctions, of Gloucs. An oil on canvas painting of Everest base camp in 1922 sold for £7,500, almost 40 times its estimate.
