The heroism of a plucky World War One carrier pigeon that delivered a vital message despite being mortally wounded by a German sniper has come to light 100 years since its death.
Recently unearthed papers found in a house clearance document the full story of the brave bird who earned the name 'VC Pigeon' after he gallant but fatal feat.
So revered was the pigeon by the loftsmen of the Western Front they had him stuffed. He is now on display at the Royal Signals Museum in Blandford, Dorset.
The museum has also received the first hand account of the last moments of VC Pigeon which they are also displaying.
