The bravery medals of an air gunner who lost his life during a raid which is legendary due to the heroism of one of his fellow crew members has sold for £2,000.

On the night of April 26, 1944 Flight Sergeant N H Johnson of 106 Squadron was the rear air gunner for a sortie in a Lancaster to bomb a ball bearing factory in Schweinfurt, Germany.

The Lancaster was attacked by a German fighter and a fire started near a petrol tank on the starboard wing between the fuselage and the inner engine.

What happened next was truly remarkable as the flight engineer Sergeant Norman Jackson climbed out of the cockpit at 20,000ft to try and put out the fire which had engulfed the plane.
