Gardeners who see these black coloured tomatoes appearing in their greenhouses this summer would be forgiven for thinking their plants had a bad case of blight.

In fact the dark coloured bulbous fruit is a new breed of black tomato that is now being sold in the UK for the first time.

The jet black crop were developed by professors who discovered some varieties of purple tomatoes contained the antioxidant anthocyanins which are also in blueberries.

They combined these with red tomatoes to produce the black variety, which are now being heralded as a new superfood because the anthocyanins are said to help fight diabetes and obesity.
Devon-based Sutton Seeds have secured the rights to start selling the new plants, named 'Indigo Rose', to gardeners across the country.
