An archaeological dig is underway at the site of a bloody Civil War battle in a bid to uncover artefacts hidden for 376 years.<br />

Four exploratory trenches have been dug as part of the excavation of the former medieval high street in Weymouth, Dorset.<br />

The seaside town witnessed the Battle of Weymouth in February 1645 where Parliamentarians outnumbered by six to one saw off a Royalist plot to seize it.<br />

Five hundred people were killed during the fighting and had the Royalists won, Charles I would have secured the safe south coast port he needed to land 35,000 French troops - potentially altering the course of history.
