Charming previously unseen photos of a university's historic Thomas Hardy's production have come to light a century later.

They show the performance of his play 'The Dynasts' by the Oxford Union Dramatic Society in 1920.

It was the first time the prestigious society, which was founded in 1885, staged a play by a living author.

The large ensemble cast can be seen in costume performing various scenes from Hardy's epic Napoleonic Wars drama which was published in three parts in 1904, 1905 and 1908.

Hardy was a distant relative of Captain Thomas Hardy, who served with Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.
